Is this drug dangerous?

No it is not as long as it is taken as instructed by your doctor.

Taking phentermine together with other diet medications such as fenfluramine (Fen-Phen) or dexfenfluramine (Redux) can cause a rare fatal lung disorder called pulmonary hypertension.

What is Fen-Phen?

Fenfluramine (marketed as Pondimin, Ponderax and Adifax) is a drug that was part of the Fen-Phen anti-obesity medication. Fenfluramine was introduced on the U.S. market in 1973. It increases the level of the neurotransmitter serotonin, a chemical that regulates mood, appetite and other functions. The end result is a feeling of fullness and loss of appetite. The drug was withdrawn from the U.S. market in 1997 after reports of heart valve disease, and pulmonary hypertension, including a condition known as cardiac fibrosis.

What is Redux?

Dexfenfluramine (marketed as Redux) is a serotoninergic anorectic drug: it reduces appetite by increasing the amount of serotonin in the brain. It is the d-enantiomer of fenfluramine and is similar to amphetamine, but lacks any psychologically stimulating effects. It was for some years in the mid-1990s approved by the US FDA for the purposes of weight loss. However, following multiple concerns about the cardiovascular side-effects of the drug, such approval was withdrawn and it was retired from the market in 1997.
